I run a daycare from my home, and want to get a pet for the kids that I care for. Many of them don't have a pet at home, and I think that it would be good for them. What type of animal would be the best around small children? I want something that they can touch, and possibly hold.
My state has restrictions on what I cannot have. No reptiles, or chickens, or amphibians, or tigers, or monkeys….
I know, strange rules, but that is what they actually wrote in the rulebook.

A hamster or rabbit vvould be a good pet, just make sure none of the kids are allergic before you get it.

A guinea pig, hampster, or gerbil..but you run the risk of it biting the kids. A fish is a good idea, but you can't really hold a fish lol. I wouldn't do a dog or a cat, there's a lot of potty training involved in that. Plus make sure none of the kids are allergic to animals with fur or anything. Maybe even a bunny.

A hamster or fish. I know they can't hold the fish, but those are fun, but not fun to clean the tank. What about a small dog?

Wow, I was going to say a baby chick, but I guess you can go the Guinea Pig Route. They are fluffy and generally friendly and smart, but not as smart as a Ferret, they generally stay where they are told to in a fish tank or cage, but it has to be cleaned regularly to stop the smell. Birds are less messy, but they you have the beak biting thing. Or you could go for one of those really tiny pocket dogs 🙂 Anything you get the kids will love I am sure!

Rabbits are good. Try to get a very docile one. If the kids are old enough, you might even get them to help you measure out the rabbit's food, refill the water bottle and stuff like that, so the kids learn the basics of how to look after rabbits. That's always a good lesson for kids.
I wouldn't recommend getting a small dog because they can get a bit snappy especially if small children want to pet them all the time. Plus you'd have to walk it a few times every day and I'd imagine if you're running a daycare, that could be difficult.
And yes, definitely no tigers with small children around! I'm slightly worried by the fact that your state feels they need to specify that, lol.

Turtles are a great idea, however, they are known to carry salmonella?? I think? I remember my small turtles I had did. I had to wash my hands after each time I touched them.

NOT a rabbit, they have very fragile bones that might be easily broken by a toddler just holding one.
How about a hermit crab or a turtle?

Try to get 2 sugar gliders. They can be difficult to care for but wonderful gentle pets. They usually love to be around children, held, touched, carried in your pocket. If they become extremely attached to you,you can place them on almost anything and they will glide to your shoulder. When I say difficult to care for they have to be fed fresh fruit so many times a day they have to be on a balanced, consistent diet and they like their toys….Do a litle research on them, they are awesome little pets.
